The department of Mathematics was founded in August 1963. Students in the early years were enrolled according to their top choices. Most of the students back then were the top at their age and were outstanding in their later career. In 1973, the department was further approved by the Ministry of Education to set up both pure and applied divisions and to found the institute of Mathematics for the Master program. In August 1995, the institute was merged into the department which offered both bachelor and Master programs ever since.

The first department chairman is Fr. Richartz (Divine Word Missionaries, Philosophy Ph.D., University of Münster, German). One year later, he was succeeded by Sr. Ambrosia Pohanka (Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit, Mathematics Ph.D., Universität Wien), who remained as the department chairman for 19 years. Despite of tough situation in the early years, Sr. Ambrosia Pohanka managed to establish a paradigm for sincere teaching, rigorous working, and selfless dedication which has become a good departmental tradition.
